A new technological landscape: Data Center and Multi-cloud


Data center is no longer just a fixed location behind corporate firewalls as it was before. We have now a variety of global and multi-cloud services (public, private or hybrid infrastructure and services such as SaaS, PaaS or BPaaS), that help to speed up the development, testing and implementation of applications able to drive companies’ businesses.

Since companies’ operating needs have become increasingly complex, a lot of new applications and technological developments such as artificial intelligence, cloud as a service (CaaS), Internet of Things (IDC), machine learning and mobility have appeared in the technological landscape. On the other hand, IT budgets and personnel are being reduced and funds used for other technological initiatives or destined to other areas within companies. That’s why IT departments should adapt to this changing landscape made of applications, users and locations, by choosing and implementing the best data center and multi-cloud strategy.

Data center traffic is growing fast and global cloud data center traffic is forecast to reach 19.5 zettabytes (ZB) annually by 2021. Such traffic is going to represent globally the 95% of total data center traffic for that year. This is because in the past, security concerns have represented a huge barrier to cloud adoption. However improvements in data center management and information control have helped to minimize risks and, furthermore, security innovations and the benefits offered by cloud computing have boosted its growth.

The proliferation of IoT applications, such as smart cars, smart cities, connected health services and digital public services, requires scalable computing and storage solutions that can meet the new and growing demands of data centers.

The changing business landscape has had a significant impact and created a “new normal” for IT. Data centers and cloud strategy are evolving in three different ways:

  • Diversity of Applications. Next generation applications will be delivered through the cloud, virtual machines and containers. The IT must also change the security and control of local data centers while leveraging the automation and simplicity of private and public cloud options.
  • Agility. The IT must evolve to accelerate its own creation and delivery of services in order to meet the needs of applications, the development of operations, business lines and business users, at the speed they expect.
  • Risk reduction. The increasing variety of application locations leads to a greater number of attack surfaces.
